Jan is a dedicated International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with years of experience helping mothers and babies achieve their feeding goals. As the owner of Lactation for Mothers and Babies, she brings compassionate, evidence-based support to families in need. Jan has worked as an IBCLC at Mother Baby Lactation Services and previously served as an RN and IBCLC at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital. Her expertise spans all aspects of infant feeding, from breastfeeding and bottle-feeding techniques to specialized support for tongue and lip ties. Beyond her work in lactation, Jan serves on the Board of Directors at the Effingham County Humane Society, showcasing her deep commitment to care and support—whether for families or animals in need. Mastitis usually occurs suddenly, often noticed on waking, and it is important to respond to the symptoms correctly and quickly. The symptoms are redness in an area of the breast which is tender to touch and feels warm. The mother may feel unwell, but not always, initially. This may escalate quickly with increased pain, a rising temperature, headaches and body aches and lethargy. The immediate "first aid" is application of cold treatments to the affected breast (repeated as needed), analgesia, and continue to breastfeed from the affected breast. The mother needs to REST, so call in help so that can happen asap. The management of mastitis has recently changed in light of updated research and evidence. Consequently massaging the affected area and repeatedly expressing the affected breast are no longer recommended. Seek medical help if the symptomatic treatments don't reduce the inflammation in 12-24hrs. Antibiotics may not be required if the inflammation is treated effectively and early - an IBCLC can guide individual cases. Identifying what contributed to the mastitis episode in important to avoid mastitis recurring. Specific probiotics can be helpful with recovery and ongoing resolution of breast microbiome disturbance (dysbiosis) eg Qiara. It can be hard to know what nutrients you need during breastfeeding as it’s not talked about very much compared to pregnancy!
While breastfeeding, you’re supplying micronutrients to the baby through your milk that will support their continued growth and development and your own nutrient needs are high because of the demands of this stage + your on-going repletion and recovery after pregnancy and birth.
It’s a lot! It’s no wonder you need more calories and many more nutrients now compared to pregnancy.
And - the realities of eating well and eating enough are real, so now is absolutely the time to embrace the foods and meals that make it easier for you to feed yourself!

Jan has helped me with all four of my kiddos!! She helped me and guided me through my first son, whom of which was level 4 tongue tied but I chose to not revise til he was one. We breastfed for 19 months!!! Jan also helped me establish good latched with my twins after our nicu stay. We also was able to figure out tandem nursing! Jan’s such a wonderful person and teacher!!
